The wind is high tonight. You slow down as you approach the bridge. Afraid, perhaps? You need not be.

I was so surprised when the masons hired me. I had no experience and little strength. I was a gangly, ragged boy with long pale wrists protruding from my cuffs.

At the end of the first day, Mr Smith asked me to stay behind. I was afraid I had done badly. It wasn’t until I saw the knife that I realised what my role was, after all.

The crown they paid me was good value. The bridge will never fall.
